Extreme Finder

Currently operational options Heat waves (Tmax)
Data used WATCH data (Weedon et al. 2011, 2014)
  • WFD 1900- 1978 Tmax data provided
  • Blended WFD and WFDEI 1979 - 2000
    • maximum of WFD daily maximum and WFDEI 3 h Tair
  • WFDEI 2001- onwards
    • 3 h Tair used to calulate daily Tmax
Method Meehl and Tebaldi (2004) : Basis for percentile thresholds - set into Input.nml (namelist)
  • Critical percentiles: 81, 97.5
Location
  • UMEP
    • Pre-processor
      • Meteorological Data
        • ExtremeFinder

Window

Steps to use
  1. Latitude and Longitude of the area of interest
    • N postive
    • E positive
  2. Select the period to be analysed
    • Start year etc
    • End year etc
  3. Select Output File
    • enter a filename and directory
    • (nb: this will be overwritten if not a new name)
  4. Generate - causes the plugin to run
Output: Heat waves (Tmax)
  1. Daily Tmax with time (Y= Year, X=Month)
    • Colour gives Temperature,
    • Yellow Box Highlights Heatwave periods Media:TMax1.jpg
  2. Box plot of distribution of heat wave by year.
  3. Number of Heat waves days per year Media:HWDays.jpg
